Light at the right wavelength changes how your skin cells behave. That’s photobiomodulation. Here’s the science behind how it works, what the research shows, and why this mask is designed to deliver accuracy and efficacy in 10 minutes every day.
PBM, also known as low-level laser therapy, uses gentle red or near-infrared light, from 600 to 1100 nanometres, to stimulate cellular repair and reduce inflammation. Unlike surgical or cosmetic lasers, PBM is a non-invasive treatment that does not heat, burn or destroy tissue. It uses safe, non-ionizing light, making it one of the safest therapies available.
How light works in skin cells
There's nothing mysterious about it. Light is absorbed in the skin cell, the cell makes more energy, and the cell puts that energy to work with 3 actions.
01
Absorb
Your cells contain light-sensitive molecules called chromophores, and they absorb specific wavelengths. The best-known one is cytochrome c oxidase, an enzyme inside the mitochondria. It responds to red and near-infrared light, which is exactly why those wavelengths are used.
02
Energize
Absorbing that light nudges the mitochondria to produce more ATP, the molecule your cells run on. It also releases signalling molecules like nitric oxide. So the cell has more energy on hand, and a signal to use it.
03
Respond
Cells spend that energy on repair: building collagen and elastin, calming inflammation and improving local circulation. Consistency is key. Wear the mask 10 minutes a day, every day.
What the research shows
Photobiomodulation has decades of research behind it and thousands of peer-reviewed papers. Here are 4 results, each with the sample size, the study length and a link to the abstract.
76%76%
improvement in inflammatory acne
107 people with mild to moderate acne did daily 15-minute sessions of violet 415 nm and red 660 nm light for 12 weeks. Comedones improved by 58%.
76 people in a randomized, split-face, sham-controlled trial used 633 nm and 830 nm light twice a week for 4 weeks. Skin elasticity improved by up to 19%.
These are published studies of red, near-infrared and violet LED light therapy using a range of devices, doses and settings. They aren't trials of this mask, and individual results vary. A further controlled trial of 136 volunteers (Wunsch and Matuschka, 2014) measured an increase in collagen density by ultrasound. This mask is a cosmetic device, not a medical treatment.
5 wavelengths, 5 depths.
360 light sources: 90 chips with 4 LEDs each, giving 5 wavelengths across the mask. Each one stops at a different depth and does a different job.
415 nm
Violet
The shallowest of the 5 wavelengths, working right at the surface. It's aimed at acne-causing bacteria and the inflammation that comes with them. You'll find it in the Anti-acne and Bedtime modes.
590 nm
Yellow
Targets the epidermal and upper dermal skin layers to soothe irritation, reduce redness, and boost radiance. Yellow also modulates melanin production and tyrosinase activity to help lighten melasma and hyperpigmentation. Yellow is usually paired with red. It runs in Rejuvenation, Morning and Bedtime modes.
633 nm
Red
Targets the mid dermis. This is the anti-aging wavelength. It boosts collagen and elastin production to fade fine lines and wrinkles. It refines pores and skin texture, calms inflammation and improves radiance. It runs in 5 of the 6 modes: Repairing, Rejuvenation, Anti-aging, Morning and Bedtime.
850 nm + 1072 nm
Near-infrared + deep near-infrared
The 2 deepest of the 5 wavelengths, and almost invisible. Near-infrared is used for deep repair, circulation and hydration. It's the perfect complement to red light. It runs in Anti-aging, Morning and Bedtime modes.
Depth
Wavelength decides depth.
The mask gives off 5 wavelengths, and each one stops at a different depth. Shallow to deep, left to right.
415 nm · Violet
The shallowest. It stays in the epidermis.
590 nm · Yellow
Reaches the upper dermis.
633 nm · Red
Travels through the mid dermis.
850 nm · Near-infrared
Passes the dermis into the deeper tissue.
1072 nm · Deep near-infrared
The deepest, and invisible to the eye. The chips around the eyes and the nasolabial folds carry it.
Schematic, not to scale. How far light travels depends on the wavelength, the dose and your skin.
Design
Why design matters
The shape and fit of an LED mask can affect how much light actually reaches the tissue and how cells respond to it. The logic is simple. Most masks don't contour the face, so the light hits at an angle and reflects off the skin, and reflected light is wasted light. This mask is made of flexible medical-grade silicone that moulds to your face, so the LED chips sit close to the skin at a consistent distance across the forehead, the cheeks and the sides of the nose, reducing the amount of reflected light. More light absorbed means faster results.
Fit
Why fit matters
Same LEDs, same light. Distance and angle decide how much of it gets into the skin.
Contoured silicone
Rigid shell
Contoured siliconeThe LEDs sit close to the skin, at one consistent distance across the forehead, the cheeks and the sides of the nose. The light is absorbed, not reflected.
Rigid shellThere's an air gap at the brow, around the eyes and at the mouth. Light arrives at an angle, and part of it bounces off and never reaches the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is photobiomodulation?
Photobiomodulation, also called low-level light therapy or red light therapy, uses low-power red, near-infrared or violet light to change how cells behave. It's non-thermal, so it doesn't heat, cut or damage tissue. Light-sensitive molecules in your cells absorb specific wavelengths, the mitochondria produce more ATP, and the cells use that energy to repair themselves, build collagen and calm inflammation.
Why do 360 light sources matter?
The mask has 90 LED chips on the face, and every chip carries 4 LEDs: violet 415, yellow 590, red 633 and a near-infrared LED. That one is 1072 nm on the chips around the eyes and the nasolabial folds, where it targets lines and wrinkles, and 850 nm everywhere else. That works out to 360 individual light sources, so the light covers your face evenly instead of in a patchwork of single-colour diodes. The MSK588 has 147 chips, or 588 light sources.
How often should I use the mask?
Every day, for 10 minutes. Each mode runs for 10 minutes by default, and the timer turns it off for you.
Should I get the MSK360 or the MSK588?
The MSK360 is the mask on its own: 90 chips, 360 light sources, $450. The MSK588 adds 57 chips under the jaw, for 588 light sources, at $650. Same wavelengths, same 6 modes, same 10-minute timer.
Why is it less expensive than the big names?
Because it was priced that way on purpose. The LED chips and the contoured medical-grade silicone weren't the place to economize, so the retail price was. The MSK360 is $450 CAD and the MSK588 is $650. The idea is that good light should be something you own, not something you rent by the session.
Can I use it if I'm pregnant?
No. Pregnancy, trying to conceive and breastfeeding are all reasons not to use the mask. If your situation isn't straightforward, check with your own clinician.
Do I need a light-sensitivity test?
Yes. Before your first facial session, run it for 10 minutes on your arm. If you see redness or feel itching, stop and talk to a clinician before you go any further.
